Visual Variety from Simple Prompts.
Strict guidelines and narrow choices of materials can be helpful in teaching specific concepts or diving deep into a particular lesson. Being vague and offering a broad selection of media with a class that has demonstrated maturity, can result in some amazing break throughs in creativity.
My prompt for an advanced class was to "sculpt light." We brainstormed ways that light could be manipulated:
Students were to choose a corded LED light or a battery operated candle. Their assignment was to use light as an expressive element in a sculpture that "illuminated" some part of their personality or told a story about themselves. This was near the final portion of the year, so they had been exposed to a lot of media and were given full access to my supply room and could bring in items from home to exceed expectations.
