Anaglyph Illustrations

A STEM and Career inspired lesson for grades 4 to 12.

​I work in a magnet high school where students choose a program area, and many earn a certification by the time they graduate, even earning some college credit.  We have programs like bio pharmacology, game design, nursing, welding, cosmetology, HVAC and a few others. I wanted to do a lesson that would allow students to illustrate something within their desired field within their artwork, and connect with my school community bringing more attention to my program. Perhaps I could reach students who had not yet considered taking an art class as an elective.
 
Career pathways is often in our curriculum, so even if you do not teach in a magnet school, students could consider a theme tied to a possible career choice within their artwork, or have them explore art careers to illustrate. I also wanted to try something new and fun, 3D illustration! Since I had not done this before I needed to start simple therefore this was mainly a line-based illustration project. If I do it again, I think we may be able to dive a bit deeper, but students were very engaged and had a lot of fun with this project.
 
I watched a few tutorials online, some actually provided bad advice, so I made my own below.
​Though we used tracing paper, you could do this using light tables, windows, transfer paper, or other methods. They key thing was to make sure your colors paired well with your 3D glasses. I found the glasses on Amazon HERE. (50 pair for under $8 at the time of publication) but you can also make your own as I show in the video.
 
I showed students some professional examples. The skeleton below can be downloaded HERE and is copyright free.

​Take some time to note that if you want the image to pop to the foreground, the blue goes to the left. If you want the image to go behind the picture plane, then the blue goes to the right. By adjusting the distance of blue and red, you can manipulate the depth of the illustration. THIS image from the Hobbit is detailed in the video below.
​Because our tracing paper was translucent, we spray mounted our final images onto watercolor paper. When our lesson was complete, we displayed the work with an envelope of 3D glasses so that students and staff could enjoy the images as well in 3D.
