For these projects I have students brainstorm their interests…
- Political
- Activism
- Cultural
- Hobbies
- Sports
- Travels
- Careers, etc…
I might also assign a topic…
- Historical Art Periods
- Styles of art
- Artists contemporary/historical
- Art elements or other art concepts
I show samples of what other artists have done for artistic clothing design that motivates my students to not just create merchandise that could easily be purchased in a store. I remind them this is art class, and we are making wearable works of art, no gift shop items like a simple sports cap or faux Nike shoes.
I identify 3 requirements, and 3 ways to exceed expectations.
Required:
- 2 sketches and 1 formal proposal
- All sides of the item, front and back, must be considered.
- There should be a clear and personal theme
To exceed expectations:
- Use gradients and or detailed pattern
- Use of embellishments
- Sewing or embroidery
I make blank templates available to students, easily found with a Google search. Like this one for shoes. I have students list their interests and then select two for colored sketches. We come together and share our sketches to get group or peer partner feedback before selecting the design we will each move forward with.
